Today, HSH Hans Adam II celebrates the anniversary of his enthronement as Sovereign Prince of Liechtenstein. Congratulations to him and may he enjoy many more years on the throne.
TM King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden are on the last day of their 2-day trip to the neighboring Republic of Finland to join in the commemoration of the Swedish-Finnish Bicentennial.
Have you ever thought that Finland would and should be better off as still a Grand Duchy when it gained it's independence from Russia. And had chose it's own grand ducal monarch aside from the Russian crown like Norway did with Sweden?
ReplyDeleteI don't know about that scenario. It would seem odd to me for a non-Romanov to be Grand Duke of Finland. What I would have preferred was that the post-independence Kingdom of Finland had been maintained. Prince Friedrich of Hessen was all set to be King of Finland when the Allies won the Great War and anyone who was German suddenly became very unpopular. I think that would have been the ideal situation -independent Kingdom of Finland.
ReplyDeleteGermany is known for having offering monarchs to be the sovereigns of countries throughout Europe because Germany was essentially a country of monarchs. And I don't know about a Kingdom of Finland. But a post-independence Grand Duchy to me sounds perfect for Finland, Romanov or not. And it would be nice to see more sovereign nations that are Grand Duchies like Luxembourg around.
