Mad Monarchist Salute: Portugal

Recently, blog member down-under the Radical Royalist reported on the recent presidential election in Portugal, which was actually a victory of sorts for the tireless, determined Portuguese monarchists. They had called for a boycott of the elections to demonstrate a rejection of the republican system or, to make a more obvious statement, to invalidate the ballots by writing “I want a king” across the page. It seems to have worked. A combination of monarchist campaigning and apathy and frustration with the political class in Portugal resulted in 5,139,583 out of 9,631,222 registered voters boycotting the election or invalidating their ballots by calling for a monarch. Only 40.4% of the Portuguese participated compared to 59.6% who did not -an obvious “vote” of no-confidence in the republican government and the current crop of politicians running the country.

In a way, this is not surprising given the well known extent of the economic crisis in Portugal which many are expecting to go the way the way of Greece due to the huge debts and massive entitlements in Portugal. People from all walks of life are fed up and very few of any political persuasion are happy with the situation. However, that in no way detracts from the great credit due to Portuguese monarchists for their constant efforts to argue, educate and claim the attention of the public toward the restoration of their venerable monarchy. Finding ways to grab public attention can sometimes be more than half the battle these days and the Portuguese monarchists have done that in a harmless but powerfully symbolic way with the use of flags. In 2009, during the night, Portuguese monarchists swapped the municipal flag on the city hall for the old blue and white flag of the Kingdom of Portugal. In 2010 they did the same to mark the birthday of the heir to the Portuguese throne, taking down the green-red republican national flag and putting up a huge blue-white flag in its place in Edward VII Park in downtown Lisbon.

At a time when ‘group think’ seems to be more prevalent than ever, and so many seem apathetic on virtually any subject that does not immediately effect their own person, it is heartening to see such zeal and energy on the part of monarchists. It also does not hurt that, especially in Portugal, the history of the republic has been a history of turmoil, penury and utter failure which stands in stark contrast to the peak of Portuguese greatness achieved under the monarchy. People need to be made to understand that things do not have to remain the way they are and that, as a kingdom, Portugal was once on the cutting edge of scientific advancement and discovery in the world, that Portugal was once among the wealthiest countries in the world and established the first and most enduring maritime empire on earth. The Portuguese can be justly proud of all of that and the monarchists are working to ensure that such pride is revived, encouraged and used to motivate people to reject republicanism and restore the Kingdom of Portugal. For all of that, they are well deserving of all due credit. Monarchists of Portugal, I SALUTE you!

The World Salutes Chile

Tonight the terrible ordeal of the miners of Chile is finally over and it has, thank God, had a happy ending as all 33 of the trapped miners, buried half a mile under the earth for the last 10 weeks, have finally been rescued. At such a time it is appropriate for people all around the world to stop for a moment and join the people of Chile in thanking God for the deliverance of these 33 men from the belly of the earth. Chile as a whole has put its best face forward during this crisis, showing deep faith, unsinkable hope, determination and teamwork but not too proud to accept help from others. Whatever was needed to rescue these men was accepted and was done and their spirit has inspired the world. God has answered the prayers of a nation and many around the world and we should all be grateful. Thank God and a big Mad Monarchist salute to the miners, their families, the rescue workers and the country and people of Chile. Viva Chile!

MM Salute: The Loyal Lao

Since I am currently off my regularly scheduled posts, I thought I would take this opportunity to do something I have been meaning to for a while; that is to send a Mad Monarchist SALUTE to the loyal monarchists of Laos. The country is in a terrible condition today, effectively still under Communist Vietnamese occupation, and I had heard that loyalty to the monarchial principle survived there with some people venerating images of the neighboring King of Thailand in the absence of their own monarch. However, I have lately become very impressed by the loyalty of the Lao exile community, particularly the younger generations. Since establishing the Mad Monarchist Channel on YouTube I have been surprised that of all the videos I have contributed (all of them very modest with nothing at all fancy as you all know) that it is a short video on the Royals of Laos that has been viewed more often than any other, some 21,287 times as of this posting. That so many young Lao people, having been born and lived entirely in exile, still have such an interest in their royal history, such fidelity to their ancient monarchy and steadfastly staunch opposition to the communist usurpers who took power frankly inspires me. For displaying all of these qualities in the face of such obstacles I think the loyal monarchists of Laos should serve as an example to others in similar situations around the world. So, ever-loyal, ever-faithful patriotic loyalists of Laos; the Mad Monarchist salutes you!

(so everyone will know this is true loyalty at work and not some fabulous bit of video wizardry on my own part, I submit the video in question)

Mad Monarchist Salute: Miss California

I have mixed feelings about beauty pageants, say what you will about the good causes they champion it still seems like objectification at worst and at best simply further glorification of the beautiful. I like a pretty face as much as the next guy, but I never met a beautiful person who did not know it and they are usually celebrated enough without winning any contests. However, I have to give credit to Carrie Prejean of California, runner-up in the Miss USA pageants for displaying on national television that her beauty is not just skin deep. In a deplorable effort to politicize a beauty pageant (as liberals love to politicize *everything*) one of the judges; a radical homosexual activist self-dubbed Perez Hilton, asked Miss Prejean what her view on "gay marriage" was. To my surprise, and with the audience booing in the background, Miss California responded, in a very respectful way, that according to her faith marriage was between a man and a woman -end of story. Needless to say Perez Hilton gave her a "zero" for her answer and thus cost her the crown. He later went on his video blog and insulted Miss Prejean in the most vile language and admitted that she lost because of her answer. He said she should have supported "gay marriage" or simply dodged the question. However, to her credit, in a later interview Miss Prejean said she did not regret her answer and that it was more important for her to be "Biblically correct" than "politically correct". I don't know anything else about her, but I can see for myself that she is qualified to win a simple beauty pageant and for giving up her chance to stand by her religious convictions the Mad Monarchist salutes Carrie Prejean.
