I think if St Valentine is alive today he will be furious. Valentine day is a celebration of love which is always platonic in its purest form. However nowadays valentine day is just another excuse for drowning oneself in debauchery and fornication.
Sadly true which is why I always try to draw attention to the origin by saying "St Valentine's Day" whereas most simply say "Valentine's Day" or even "Valentines Day" -a day for 'Valentines'.
I'll be spending this Valentine's in the theatre watching the New Monty Python Play. This is for no disrespect to the Blessed Saint or what his day is supposed to be about. Its just that my own beloved is current many thousands miles away in Texas. I doubt my gift will reach her in time but oh well.
And in truth the whole 'Valentines' thing annoyed me. As if there was more then one St.Valentine.
Those are the relics of St Valentine, though (and I know this not what you meant -not the 'objects' known as "Valentines") but there was more than one St Valentine -in fact there were several martyrs with that name.
