Do my eyes deceive me, or is the Queen really riding side-saddle? That has to be difficult.
I have to admit -- indeed, I gladly admit -- that Queen Elizabeth II is a class act. I wish more of the younger members of her family would follow her example.
Yes, the Queen always rode side-saddle on such occasions (of course she's ridden in a carriage for quite a while now). It's not really done anymore that I know of. The last woman I knew who did was my great-grandmother (and then rarely because she rarely rode a horse). I don't know if they even make side saddles anymore.
