These events were certainly tragic and devastating. In the long run, though, at least as it strikes me, Monaco's monarchy seems much stronger than many others. So perhaps, in the end, it was less affected by the French Revolution than other places? What do you think?
In the end it was probably less effected, mostly I think because the monarchy is so central to the tiny principality most realize that the country would not survive without the Grimaldis. However, Monaco probably suffered more than any other country as a result of the French Revolution after the French themselves. Thankfully there were no guillotines in Monacoville but I don't know of any other sovereign family outside of the French royals themselves who were thrown in prison and even sent to their deaths because of the revolution. The loss of Menton and Roquebrune, roughly 80% of the territory of what had been Monaco, was also probably a result of what started with the Revolution. It was a close run thing though, if not for the 'politicking' of Prince Joseph and the favor of Talleyrand Monaco might have remained just another minor corner of France.
