MM: I had been talking with a priest about the issue of democracy and monarchy and he told me "yes god anoited monarchs for israel, but it is no more, he gave us free will to decide what form of government we want to have so god supports democracy". Do you know any biblical quote to counter that?
Sure, read my 'Refuting Republicanism in Christianity' article or even any of the passages I've posted in this series. But you don't need to anyway as the "free will" argument makes no sense whatever. The Israelites had free will too and just because God gives us the ability to do something does not mean he wishes us to do it. We have the free will to decide to kill someone but that doesn't mean God supports murder. Democracy is the rule of the majority and the Bible states over and over again that the majority will usually do what is easy and wrong instead of what is difficult and right. The mob turned against Jesus, the mob clamored for Moses to take them back to Egypt etc.
