MM Video: King James I of Britain

  1. Oh awesome. He is one of my favourite kings of Britain, and a great writer too! I also like how he fervently promoted the idea of divine rights of monarchs and I think Britain to this day should remember to honour their queen with much respect.

    1. Traditionally the Scots didn't believe in the divine right of Kings. Scotland has a long history of egalitarianism and the monarch was regarded as the first among equals. The people had the right to remove him if he didn't do his job properly and replace him with another member of the royal family.

  2. He's not one of my favorites but I will agree he wrote some great stuff about monarchy that he gets little credit for. It was not just 'I'm god on earth' sort of stuff but had alot about the duties of a prince toward his nation and was a lot deeper than most people think.

  3. What about him did you not like about him? Just wondering.

  4. He had some rather disgusting personal habits, started the plantations in Ulster (and the problems have not ceased since) and such things. Nothing too serious, just doesn't make my "favorites" list. I try to be strict.

  5. Ah I see. I'm going to look up that Ulster thing because I don't even know what that is (learning new things every day). I heard something along the lines that he never took a bath or something. Is that true because if so that's rather funny.

  6. That's when Scots Protestants were transplanted to northern Ireland -people who are admirably loyal to their Crown but it has just caused *alot* of problems ever since. As for the baths, that is what is said. It is also said that he liked to roll around in the guts of deer when he hunted (I have no idea what that was about), he slobbered alot, told crude jokes etc. Just considered rather ill-mannered. Lately it's also been said he was a homosexual but I'm not sure I believe that. It is hard to know what to believe as some things may have been exaggerated by English writers who were annoyed at having a Scottish monarch.

  7. Oh man. Yeah the guy is rather crude... but still kind of funny.

Nah I don't believe he is homosexual. Didn't he impregnate his wife 9 times and wrote against sodomy, saying it is a sin? There's a lot of stories about him and his wife even which are rather touching. I personally would never believe those alleged claims of his homosexuality though; he had made a few enemies I remember and there were probably many slander campaigns against him much like many other monarchs out there. It isn't anything new I'm sure. Being the first Scottish monarch of Great Britain must have been tough.

  8. He should never have moved to London and ruled England from Edinburgh.
