It was on this day in 1960 that one my favorite modern monarchs, HM King Baudouin of the Belgians married his blushing Spanish bride Queen Fabiola.
The Cross of Laeken reports on this occasion and the Belgie Royalist has a (Spanish language)
video clip of the happy day. To my mind the late King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola represent the best of what modern constitutional monarchs can be; dignified, devoted to their duty but strong in their convictions, bearing hardship privately and the embodiment of the most noble ideals of their country. The world of monarchy could use more such couples.
I agree, and thank you for the link. Although I am more interested in times in Belgian history when the kings had a stronger impact on political/military affairs, Baudouin and Fabiola are a fine example of a royal couple persevering in their duty in a weakened, often frustrating and far from ideal position.
