Celebrations have been in full swing in the Kingdom of Belgium to mark four royal wedding anniversaries; their majesties King Albert II and Queen Paola (50 years), their highnesses Prince Philippe and Pincess Mathilde (10 years), Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz (25 years) and Prince Laurent and Princess Claire (6 years).
The Mad Monarchist joins all patriotic Belgians in wishing all four couples many more years of wedded bliss.
The Belgian Royal Family are a very low key Royal Family. One rarely see's them wearing the fabulous Royal Jewels.Albert II also aboloished several Historical Titles in 2001(Count of Flanders, Count of Hainaut and Prince of Liège)
ReplyDeleteIt was a nice idea to celebrate all four anniversaries together. God bless them all but I have to say I wish they had picked a different day for the party- it seems a bit out of place, practically on the anniversary of Queen Astrid's death.
ReplyDeleteIn answer to Le Prince Regent, I don't really like the fact that the King abolished those titles. It all contributes to the constant effort to weaken Belgium's identity and traditions. The Count of Hainaut title, in particular, was abolished over a rather futile (in my opinion) linguistic dispute.
ReplyDeleteConsidering that the Belgians royals have a very unique and difficult job dealing with the divisions in their country I try not to be too critical of them. In regards to being "low key" I would just say that not everyone can have the pomp and ceremony of the British Empire, Versailles or the Hofburg. That being said, on special occasions I think Belgian royal ceremonies, with the soldiers parading, the massed flags waving and the royal mounted escort on display are some of the most inspiring occasions of monarchial pomp & splendor around.
