Prince Harry perhaps or the such? Even as we speak as an example, Prince Harry is causing tides of suppprt for monarchism in Australia. Maybe this could be replicated in the less populated and smaller Scotland. With maybe the Earl of Wessex, promised his fathers title upon his parents deaths, making him Duke of Edinburgh being anothet candidate.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10334180782785535549noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-53937656561658454882014-09-18T03:59:38.396-05:002014-09-18T03:59:38.396-05:00A great post. Alas it is true that the nationalists are more Jacobin than Jacobite these days, a 'yes' vote would turn the Anglo-Scottish border into a new 38th parallel. However, speaking as an Englishman I must say I am worn out by the Anglo-phobia north of the border and around the globe and the portrayal of my country as a perennial oppressor. Whilst I would dearly love to see the Jacobite vision of Scotland (and indeed the whole of Britain) come to pass I also feel that all 'subjugated' peoples should be made thoroughly responsible for themselves, so that we English can no longer be held responsible for every misfortune and inconvenience.RobertAskehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14556194514793722567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-84349354057185712572014-09-10T16:09:21.689-05:002014-09-10T16:09:21.689-05:00You may be interested to hear from somebody in the...You may be interested to hear from somebody in the middle of it. The result come the 19th of September may be a surprise.
The Monarchy is not an issue in this referendum.
In Scotland there is generally not the servile, sycophantic view of Monarchy that is common in England, particularly in the South.
I remember standing in the Royal Mile in Edinburgh in 1999 as the Queen returned to Holyrood Palace in an open carraige from opening the first Scottish Parliament to sit since 1707. There was polite applause - no silly cheering - respect had been shown by the Monarch and respect was soberly returned.
You cite Charles Hapsburg as an ideal Monarch - I agree - it is a tragedy that his moderate and pragmatic policies were swept away in the aftermath of the collapse of the Central Powers in 1918. If Elizabeth and her successors handle the re-emergence of an independent Scotland with respect then that respect will be returned.
As for the EU, it is, along with NATO membership, the only game in town That may not always be the case.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14126579887368758371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-15649651947817849352014-09-07T00:35:26.151-05:002014-09-07T00:35:26.151-05:00You sir, are not so much a monarchist as you are a...You sir, are not so much a monarchist as you are a prophet. I haven't checked into it yet, but I'm just going to do what I usually do in situations like this. Look at the countries involved, look at what they used to be and do, versus what they're doing now, and then I frown and with a sigh make myself another glass of claret.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14148584087910957605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-15536996040314350622014-09-06T16:08:57.151-05:002014-09-06T16:08:57.151-05:00When I began seeing news stories about the referen...When I began seeing news stories about the referendum, I immediately wished to have your commentary. The Labour Party, deprived of its Scots bastion, would become less and less relevant in English politics, to the point that the authentic Tories and Farage's UKIP would more easily remove England from the European Union. Scotland, on the other hand, would find itself just having boarded a sinking ship; witness the rise of euroskeptic parties throughout Europe lately. The polls show that most Scots don't want that. Let's hope the ballots bear that out.Le Barde Gauloishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01773867280543359470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-77908155915987640202014-09-06T13:50:43.113-05:002014-09-06T13:50:43.113-05:00He's back! He's back!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03774194632030946890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-20505367132604588242014-09-06T13:50:23.455-05:002014-09-06T13:50:23.455-05:00Thanks!
