As for the dissolution of the empire in regard to Austria vs Prussia, I don't think it really made any difference there. Prussia had effectively become totally independent by then, the Holy Roman Empire was largely a formality at that time and it was most the decisions of the Austrian government over a period of time that allowed Prussia to surpass the Austrians. The Prussians put the army first, whereas Austria tended to neglect the military, Prussia was more favorable to trade and industrial development while Austria was more agrarian and conservative and finally where Austria tried to suppress nationalist sentiment (to keep the empire together) the Prussians decided to put a saddle on the beast and ride it. First, if the Emperor of the French had claimed the tittle of Holy Roman Emperor, would this have strengthened or weakened his position in Europe?
