She was the daughter of a minor official, then a low-ranking concubine and yet she became the absolute master of an empire of hundreds of millions for the better part of half a century. No one can say she didn't have talent. She was ruthless in her efforts to keep things as she wanted them which does not mean, as most think, that she was totally opposed to any/all change. Whether her efforts were for the better or the worse can be disputed but she persisted to the very last in them so she evidently had no doubt about what she was doing. It could easily be argued that her actions undermined the dynasty but it is also possible that the dynasty might have ended sooner without her willingness to do any/everything to maintain it.MadMonarchisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08083008336883267870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-47603526757754025492012-03-26T08:33:11.151-05:002012-03-26T08:33:11.151-05:00From what we know of her, the Dowager Empress Cixi...From what we know of her, the Dowager Empress Cixi was the consumate player, and i have no doubt that she would have considered any tactic, including assassination, to remove a rival. But for all her misdemeanours, i still cannot help but admire the Dragon Empress. Her political skills her unrivalled, her personality indomitable, and surely it is not too difficult for us to understand that in Cixi`s mind, any threat to her position was a threat to the power of the Quing dynasty and therefor a threat to Imperial rule in China?C.
