I would not go so far as to hold him that comparable to the modern communist regime but there is no doubt that, because of the actions you mention, he is considered one of the "good" figures from Chinese history, one they will acknowledge because of his anti-confucian, absolutist, 'might-makes-right' style. The unification he delivered was probably a good thing in the long-run, but given my own preferences, I would have rather that unity been accomplished without the destruction of the member kingdoms.MadMonarchisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08083008336883267870noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-2165053508196325382010-05-17T14:56:50.763-05:002010-05-17T14:56:50.763-05:00chinese religious ceremonies date back over 3,000 ...chinese religious ceremonies date back over 3,000 years to the shang and zhou dynasties, when the King (emperors didn't exist yet) participated in rituals to honor heaven. Some bloody human sacrifices occured during Shang, but the Zhou king abolished human sacrifice.

king was the secular title, the zhou kings also took a religious title, tianzi, which means son of heaven.

ironically, the first emperor of china was one of the most anti confucian people ever. He totally destroyed the old Zhou feudal system, and burned all confucian books and executed scholors. and he denobled the zhou aristocracy

Which is why the first emperor was admired by the chinese communist party and personally by Mao Zedong, when mao launched the cultural revolution, he said he was repeating what the first emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, did.

Its a shame that the first emperor tore apart china's feudal system, and dethroned the old Zhou king. Confucius himself admired the first zhou kings, citing their example as something his contempories should copy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
