He wanted to see Italy strong and united and identified Henry VII as the monarch who could accomplish this."

Oh dear ... this was a real low mark for the Holy part of HRE!

Catholics should be Guelphs!

Dante and Henry VII were in a way forerunners of False Prophet and of Antichrist.

And the carreer of Dante reminds too much of how secret and anti-Catholic societies like Rosicrucians arose when HRE was divided during 30 Years War (a war which made 17th C the top century of dead in wars prior to 20th, with at least European ones very much more lenient back in 12th or 13th C.)

His carreer in Italy is a bit like what we could expect Antichrist to be. He might very well start off very generous, hoping to do only good, then to sour when meeting resistance.

"No doubt weakened by his many battles, arduous journeys and infuriating political problems, Henry VII of Luxembourg contracted malaria and died on August 24, 1313 in Buonconvento at the age of only 39."

Same year as Jacques Molay died too.

Hoping for God to have forgiven Henry, but I am not looking forward to see his place in heaven as exalted.Hans Georg Lundahlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01055583255516264955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-29411932019748848452016-02-19T02:32:41.958-06:002016-02-19T02:32:41.958-06:00Oh, you meant Emperor Henry VII - Heinrich, not Ha...Oh, you meant Emperor Henry VII - Heinrich, not Harry!

"Holiness, well, that could come and go, and times it really tried and at other times it certainly fell short."

I agree the physical body of emperor Joseph II fell very short.

The political body ... well, considering some of his legislations, it was a sacrilege. BUt it was a sacrilege because the laws were really holy.

"It certainly was not truly “Roman” as the Pope ruled Rome and would become quite peevish if any German Emperors got ideas to take it from him."

So? It was truly Roman in the sense that Emperors were ultimately crowned by the Popes.

"As for being an “empire”, however, that too was changeable. As a patchwork of minor states and cities, it was often not much of a player on the world stage but, under men like the aforementioned Otto or Frederick, it could rise to truly imperial status if the emperor was tough enough, smart enough and ambitious enough to make it so."

The very definition of Roman Empire is precisely a patchwork of minor states and cities. When Vesuvius erupted, Pompeii was certainly part of Roman Empire. Does this mean Pompeii had a mayor who followed laws from Rome in everything he did? No.

When Vesuvius broke out, Pompeii certainly was a minor state in its own right. Public equipment was marked Senatus PopulusQue Pompeiorum. Or SPQP. This means that Pompeii had all rights of legislation and jurisdiction which Rome had, except things like declaring war. The Imperium Romanum was precisely a patchwork of city states (including, but certainly not limited to, Rome, and including a much bigger state, Egypt), under a common Imperium, a common military command.

So, both HRE and USA are in this sense truly Roman, as constitution goes.

Largeness is not included in definition of imperium. Both Imperium of Trabzont and Rome in the time of Hannibal were less powerful than HRE.Hans Georg Lundahlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01055583255516264955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8783969302315257415.post-30729921222836308102016-02-19T02:20:45.937-06:002016-02-19T02:20:45.937-06:00Funny you brought him up.
Someone just explained ...Funny you brought him up.

Someone just explained "1488" to me. I said to myself what chronogram is it, and looked up England in 1480's. Monarch the year 1488 was - the one you just cited.

I was just the other day reading some very ill omens for Prince Harry. And alas, Hebrew transscription of Harry has an aleph, I checked the wiki on Harry Truman by clicking the Hebrew letters.Hans Georg Lundahlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01055583255516264955noreply@blogger.com
