It is said that at times, Albert I considered abdicating, once the future Leopold III was grown and his father felt he was ready to take over. Albert I never did abdicate, of course, but he suggested that if he had, he would have gone abroad to live. "A priest should not live in his former parish," he is quoted as saying, a comparison which also shows an interesting attitude to the monarchy.
